Show New Mexico drops Redskins out of race By scoring 74 points in the last three games, sophomore Mike Newlin became the seventh highest scorer in Utah history for a single season. Newlin finished the year with 552 points. Also over the past three games, Newlin has broken the Utah record for most consecutive free throws made with 33. He broke Merv Jackson's record of 28 set last season. And in Saturday's game, Newlin hit 14 of those 33 to tie a conference record for consecutive free throws in one game. Easy Time Scoring With seven minutes remaining, New Mexico led by 10, but with four of Utah's starters on the sidelines, the Lobos had an easy time scoring and, in two minutes, boosted their lead to 17. The Utes never led in the contest as New Mexico took a 5-0 lead in the opening seconds. But at the close of the first half, the Redskins hit eight straight points to cut the lead to six. By Geoff Towns Staff Writer The New Mexico Lobos knocked the Redskins out of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title picture Saturday with a 102-80 victory in Albuquerque. The Utes ended up at the .500 nark for both the season (13-13) and the conference (5-5). The bos finished at 16-10 and 4-6. Wyoming took a 79-69 decision from Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon to pull into a tie for first with the Cougars. Trailed By Six The Redskins trailed by only six at halftime, 49-43, after shooting a sharp 60.9 per cent from the field. But the Lobos were even more accurate with 62.5 per cent. The Utes were again victims of personal fouls, with four starters fouling out. Guards Mike Newlin and Bob Martin each fouled out for the first time this season. Forward Ken Gardner and center Jim Mahler also had to leave the game. Newlin led the Redskin scoring with 22 points, followed by forward Joe English with 14. Mahler hit for 12, Martin for 11 and Gardner scored seven. For the Lobos, center Greg Howard scored 31 points, and guard Petey Gibson hit 23. |
