Show Physics visiting prof to speak on property of crystals institutes at Frankfurt and Freiburg, Germany. In 1964 he was appointed to his present post as professor of physics at Frankfurt's Institute of Theoretical Physics. Dr. Heinz Bilz, University visiting professor of physics and a member of the faculty at Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany, will discuss "Phonons --The Fingerprints of a Crystal" on Monday, 7 p.m. in Mark H. Greene Hall on the campus. Free to the public, Dr. Bilz' speech is the fourth in the Frontiers of Science lecture series, presented by the Department of Physics in cooperation with the Utah State Board of Education. "Professor Bilz will show how a few simple ideas of physics can be used to understand many properties of solid matter," said Dr. Peter Gibbs, professor and chairman of the Physics Department. He will trace the role of lattice vibrations (phonons) , which, acting independently, 1 account for the capacity to store heat. Dr. Bilz' major research areas in the field of solid state physics include lattice dynamics, infrared absorption, electron-phonon interaction and the dynamics of impurities. Upon obtaining his doctorate from the University of Frankfurt in 1958, Dr. Bilz served as an assistant with the physical |
