Show iimrmiEmHmmNmM Who writes this pap? Editor: Shapespeare, commenting on the aspirations of men of his day remarked, "It is a tale as told by an idiot, full of sound and fury but signifying nothing." Had he lived today to see our expressed aspirations, he might have said to us, "You seem possessed with the opinion that your government is supposed to send you to the moon, build your highways, clean the air, eliminate water pollution, fight your wars, somehow enact equality, build dams and canals, buy up tracts of land for public sanctuary "and many more events too numerous to number. If, and I repeat, if your government could perform all these functions with a wave of the magic wand through appropriations in Congress, then what in the sam hill would happen to mankind? They would become 1 passive and senseless spectators to a world they neither understood, cared about or were willing to participate in any responsible capacity to perserve." The point being that expecting any government to operate as a Santa Claus, foreign to or independent of the support rendered by independent, industrious and determined individuals is not only foolish to suppose that it can long survive, but also destructive to the dignity and worth of all mankind As a general, attitude, the American public seems to have amved at a childish and rather selfish state of demanding things from their government that no government ever has or can hope to deliver to the full satisfaction of all concerned. We probably already receive more than we deserve, based upon our willingness to work and actually merit some of the things we seem to expect delivered to our door. Merrill H. Glenn, Jr. National hysteria Editor: I admire Sam Taylor's strong words, but I have to disagree with his call to bar Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) from the campus (Interchroncom, Nov. 15). I think it is an excellent idea and very fitting that the local anti-intellectuals should group themselves under a national banner of hysteria and ignorance. Prior to this, when one heard of the April Committee, he didn't know whether it was a society of April Fools or a sewing circle. Now, with the SDS replacing the April Committee as a home for our Kampus Kooks, identification will no longer be a problem. Even the farmers in Idaho know what SDS stands for: violence, destruction, suppression of free speech and assembly. Sorry, Taylor, but it's not a question of letting this "type of trash on camDus." THpvVp nlrpnHv here. Instead, it's only a matter o letting them identify themselves. 1 think they are doing everyone a favor. James L. Stevens, Jr. What is freedom?
