Show jimmmmnmBNmM Pen must prove works Editor: Must rush to thank Keith Moore for his letter of Nov. 13 in which he endeavors to give me a spelling lesson. As usual, Mr. Moore has gone off half-cocked. He should have directed his assistance to the Chrony's copy editor who has a reading problem. Moore wants more Associated Students of the University of Utah money poured into Pen to provide additional space for the talent he detects in Zion. My objection is that Pen has been such a piece of trash that this would, probably, be a waste of money. I suggest, again, that if Pen wants more money, it should, first of all, prove that it can do something worthwhile with the funds it now receives. Until Moore can offer more than impassioned pleas, I, for one, refuse to buy his "pig in a poke." James L. Stevens, Jr. Don't support SDS Editor: Chronicle, Nov. 5, statement by Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), supporters on activities of SDS is really funny. The article states "It (SDS) took part in off-campus political activities such as GI coffee houses and working in poor communities." University students know better. Read FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover's statements. All University students should block any attempt to organize by SDS on this campus. We do not want this type of trash in our midst, students, if you agree write to the editor and let yourself be heard. ; : ' : " ' " ' ' ' - ' ' m ' ' 1 ! ', ' m ' ! ; ! ' Otherwise the SDS will get organized right under your nose as the "in" group on campus. They are experts in laying smoke screens-only thing is the smoke and SDS stinks and 90 per cent of the students know it. Come on University, write to the editor of our left wing paper and show that the University doesn't want SDS. Sam Taylor Aware of progress Editor: An article appeared in the Chronicle calling for "Reform in Industrial Schools." Among other things the writer-John Charles Bernhardt-charges the members with the dispensing of "cruel and sadistic punishment to any child who committed the most minor infraction of the rules." As a tax paying citizen of this state I am appalled by Bernhardt's accusations. That he is quite uninformed as to actual conditions, he admits, indirectly-a single tour through the Utah State Industrial School located in Ogden could hardly support his serious charges. In Bernhardt's article his proof for the alleged evil at the Industrial School is not fact nor even anything he actually saw, but rather a "feeling" he had as he took a tour. One Is left to ponder just what Bernhardt is hoping to gain by this deliberate - attempt to cast dispersions on a group of dedicated, self-sacrificing staff members. Is he engaging in the common error these days of hoping to gain personal recognition at the expense of others? Is Bernhardt aware of the good done at the institution with which I have first hand knowledge over the past 10 years? Is Bernhardt aware of the many recent improvements and those in process at the school, which attempts similar to his own could well postpone or cancel out altogether? In conclusion-the need for reform is desirable everywhere; not just in our State Industrial Schools. We all should seek improvement and the Industrial School is not unlike any other institution we could mention in some undesirable incidents. However, we should attempt to keep in perspective our complaints-do isolated incident (as surely there must be here and everywhere) present an accurate picture of the whole? And fin are we going to effectuate reform anywhere with negative slander, i advocate the positive avenue to progress and let's base otf opinions and conclusions upon fact not "feelings." Clifford L0bi Check with mommy Editor: A congratulatory note RolanGarr: f mp0' A brilliant display of awareness of the world issu other occurences on campus sir. ve you However, I do wn ought to check witt "23 more and see what exa wanted you to , wb0 encouraging that nasty writes those awful, awi in the Chrony.
