Show Volunteer for community service J, Community Service Bureau is one of the few student organizations which has the potential to involve students in a significant way through volunteer programs. The bureau, : according to the Associated Students of the University of : Utah (ASUU) "is intended to act as a clearing-house of public and private agencies seeking student help." Community Service Bureau was organized last year under the leadership of John Kesler, then studentbody president, and placed under control of the ASUU Public Affairs Board. During the bureau's first year, more than 500 students were involved working with 45 agencies. Today, programs range from organizing youth groups to tutoring adults. Special training is given to students by many volunteer institutions. Often the experience gained in volunteer work is a prerequisite to later jobs; and several students have advanced from volunteers to paid workers. Volunteer work usually requires about two hours a week. While the goals of Community Service Bureau this year have yet to be clearly set, the Chronicle suggests that the area of social action again be given top priority. We base this recommendation on four reasons. One, a student can help cure some of the problems of poverty by sharing his knowledge and experienca An example is tutoring. Also, in this area the volunteer has his greatest chance of personal growth. Two, volunteers can change' individuals, especially underprivileged children, by taking an interest in their problems and cares. Three, a person outside the poverty area can lend resources in helping to change institutions. For example, a group of "poor people" aided by students last year were able to pressure a belligerenj high school into allowing a youth group to use the school's gym facilities. Four, University students- are desperately needed. Community Service Bureau has not come close to filling the needs of volunteer agencies. For students who want to participate in either the organization of Community Service Bureau or work with cooperating volunteer agencies, fill out an application in Union 318. The application is merely a formality which allows Community Service Bureau to contact you. Tutors, teachers' assistants, youth organizers, neighborhood aids: All are needed. COME ON1.
