Show Backward state Editor: Thank you, Ronald Shook, for your "tory" on Oct. 23, an amusing masterpiece of irrelevance. You attack liquor-by-the-drink, saying that if it did live up to the claims of attracting tourism and industry, it would ruin Utah's attractive features such as freedom from "smoke, high crime rates, murderous traffic, mass-produced plastic things and people." Smoke? Have you ever tried to see Antelope Island from the east bench on an average winter day? Salt Lake's smog problem may not be the worst, but it is already worse than it should be. High crime rate? Ask any bank about crime after the current robbery spree. Ask the police about our drug problem, already comparable to many, more-populous states. Murderous traffic? The infamous California drivers are afraid to drive in Utah as it is now The problems you mention that LBD might bring in are already here without it. The amazing thing is that Utah has these problems while remaining one of the backward states, industry and tourism wise, in the nation, when it has a great potential in both areas. Any statement that industry and tourism are not needed is a denial of the fact evidenced by both gubernatorial candidates using the attraction of industry and tourism as a prime issue in their campaigns. Attitudes such as yours are responsible for Utah losing its bid for the Winter Olympics. Mr. Shook, maybe you want a quaint Walden Pond, but you shouldn't hope to drag Utah back with you.
