Born in Shelby, Miss., into a family where music was accepted as a social entertainment, Wilson began his formal musical education in grade school, receiving training on both trumpet and piano. When his family moved to Detroit, Mich., he attended school at Cass Technical Institute, where his musical interests were further fostered. As a professional musician, Wilson entered jazz during the late swing era at a time when the bebop movement was beginning. During the 1940's, he was a trumpeter for the bands of Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington. His own band was one of the proving grounds for youngsters endeavoring to enter modern music.
