Show I Arizona State sets pace in early season action 86-yard punt return by ISU's Tom Elliot to put the game on ice. Colorado State lost its opening contest in their new stadium to the rugged defense of North Texas State 17-12. Independent Utah State's quarterback John Pappas led the Aggies to a 38-0 rout of Wichita State. On the opening kickoff, tailback Altie Taylor set the mood of the game as he raced 97 yards for the first seven points of the afternoon. It's a little early in the season to be calling winners in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship race but with an impressive 31-19 victory over pre-season co-favorite University of Texas at El Paso, the Arizona State Sun Devils showed they are the team to beat as they got a real jump toward the WAC crown. A victory in next week's clash with the Wyoming Cowboys could almost wrap up the '68 title for the Sun Devils. Wyoming remains the only real threat, but the Pokes appear to be faltering. Outstanding Quarterback Despite their loss, UTEF's star quarterback Lew Dawson put on his usual outstanding performance by completing three touchdown passes of seven, 55, and 12 yards in the Miners losing effort. In the only other conference game last week, hapless New Mexico lost its third straight contest. This time the Lobos bowed to the aerial attack of Arizona 19-9. Wildcat quarterback Marc Driscoll threw for two touchdowns in leading the Arizona squad to their second victory of the season. Cowpokes Lose Punch It was a weekend for upsets and two WAC teams fell victim to underdog opponents. The major upset was the Air Force Academy's 10-3 victory over, defending WAC champion Wyoming. The Cowboys left their scoring punch in Laramie and looked like anything but- a conference champ. It was a comedy of errors down in the Cougar den Saturday night as Brigham Young University fumbled victory to the Cyclones of Iowa State 28-20. The Cougars coughed up the football too many times, giving the Cyclones one scoring opportunity after another. The big play of the contest was an |
