Show ?hillips sees parties as educators By Jolene Peden 1 Staff Writer The Peace and Freedom Party Hds for action, not guidelines," Mr. Bruce Phillips, the party's itorial candidate, 'he party was formed in onse to national problems. It's rnary purpose is to educate pie on issues the country faces. peace and Freedom candidates ' not expect to win. '!You can't win and tell the i;h simultaneously," said Mr. fillips. he platform of Peace and tedom is entirely different from se of the major parties. It is 1 a statement of principles but oroblems and their solutions. bne of the interesting policy :iks is in support of lowering voting age to 18. It is intended youths, including high school !poUts, become involved ough community centers and 1 ilar organizations. The issues are especially ';vant to high school and college dents, said Mr. Phillips. He 'ieves the "generation gap" can eliminated, "but it will have to people like me who do it." le also discussed war, racism, I poverty major issues this ction. The best thing I can say about the war is that it is illegal. It violates SEATO, the UN Charter, the Geneva Accords and our constitution." Civil War Answer Mr. Phillips said if the Vietnamese could find no other way to solve their problems, civil war was the answer, but the United States should not have become involved. He contends that to make a rational decision people can find all the information they need in the bookstores. "If people want to sacrifice their husbands, sons and friends to a useless war, basing their decision on what they read in Time and local papers, it is up to them." "Racism and poverty go hand in hand," said Mr. Phillips. "The roots of racism are economic." He said that these issues will not be solved outside the ghettos where the interests are racist and exploitive, but they can be solved within the ghettos through institutions which the people themselves control and where the interests are non-racist and non-exploitive. When their construction increases then law enforcement problems decrease. Mr. Phillips thinks the Democratic National Convention in Chicago "graphically illustrates what's wrong with American politics today." The American people had a choice between power and reason. Sen. McCarthy thought the people would choose reason. Unfortunately, they chose power, he remarked. The Yippie movement serves the same purpose as the Peace and Freedom Party: to inject pertinent issues into the main stream which politicians ignore, he said. If the American public can only attack the Yippies' cothes and the hair on heads and faces, the people must be afraid to attack the real issues the truth, he said. If the party polls two per cent of the vote, they will automatically be on the ballot in the next election. If that is the case the party will run Spanish-American Spanish-American and Negro candidates for office.
