Show Outlook I Industrial Schools": Need Much Reform By JOHN CHARLES BERNHARDT On June 19, 1968 I took a tour of the Utah State Industrial School in i Ogden, Utah. During the day those of us on the tour were allowed to move about on the campus and talk to a number of the staff members. ; Of course, we were always with a staff member and saw only what ;g he wanted us to see. -be All during the day I had the feeling that each of the staff members bI we talked to was making a conscious effort to mislead us as to the true nature of conditions at the school. .. an I soon had the feeling that I was in a children's prison where the staff amounted to nothing more than guards who were there to dispense ui, cruel and sadistic punishment to any child who committed the most minor -infraction of the rules. Punitive View , The most important charge I have to make about the schoc o there is a punitive attitude toward the students on 'V; part of w members. By and large the staff members fail U inderstand e - fundamentals of child development or of cuild and adolescent ps One boys supervisor who is now working at the school told he often hits children when Uiey ,An to do what he asks and that yells and screams at the boj " Mthe - e, The actions of this supei visor are in direct violation of rules , administration of the school claims are in effect. ; T St Report Info vMrcn to read m S) I urge anyone concerned with the welfare of Utah's cniiar my full report which I will make available in the ChromdJ ;o gt by , in such other places as the offices of the State PTA. 1 .tye to the , jt January of 1969 enough information will have been made avaiw . public thorugh the mass media in this city to bring about ;BW 'said g at the Industrial School.
