Show Mailbox Stevens Writes Again Editor: I must express my appreciation to Henry Huey for his attempt to dispel misconceptions concerning the Utah Peace and Freedom Party. Problem is, he added as much confusion as he dispelled. His declaration dec-laration "... the Peace and Freedom Free-dom Party is not a national organization" organ-ization" contradicts the Chronicle article of July 23 which states, "The party is also organizing on a national na-tional level." What's The Point Also, the legally autonomous character of state chapters which he finds so significant is of little practical importance. What would be the point of a Utah chapter, if not to add volume to the voice of a national group? The implications of autonomy and separate state ratification is that if the Utah group is dissatisfied with the national candidate, they will put up their own man and vote, meaninglessly, all 50 strong, for him. A Rubber Stamp Ridiculous? .Of . course! This I ;itonpmy; ' exists ; ft ; hame 6nly - and the Utah Peace asd 'Freedof group will rubber stamp their national na-tional candidate regardless of who he is Martin Bormann, Eld-ridge Eld-ridge Cleaver or Joseph Stalin. Instead In-stead of correcting errors, Mr. Huey ends up propogating one of his own, the myth of defacto autonomy, auton-omy, which, if true, would deprive his gay group of meaning or importance, im-portance, the very things they seek. Times Is Faulty While I was in error concerning Black Panther, Eldridge Cleaver, who is actually only a candidate for nomination by the Peace and Freedom Group, I plead innocent to any intentional misrepresentation. misrepresenta-tion. The fault lies with an erroneous erron-eous New York Times Service press release of July 28. Seems like we can't even rely on the Times anymore. any-more. Despite Mr. Huey's "nitpicking," it was pleasant to notice he did not deny the central theme of my previous prev-ious letter which was that the Black Panthers control the original Peace and Freedom Party in California and not vice versa. While he denies de-nies the presence of any Panthers in his pristine Utah association, I'm sure the California group has plenty to spare that they ' can. send put here, .to . .give. . his organization. . a touch of authenticity. Better be careful, Mr. Huey, or they will treat you to a free lesson in practical politics. In your own language Baa, Baa, Beware! Always happy to be of service. James L. Stevens, Jr. Editor: The other day I came across some of Seymour Lipset's choice words from his book, "Political Man." He wrote, "Education presumably pre-sumably broadens man's outlook, enables him to understand the need for norms of tolerance, restraining him from extremist doctrines ..." Poor Doctor Lipset! If he ever reads some of the mad ramblings " of John Charles Bernhardt, and others, it may completely destroy his assumptions about men. In Mr. Bernhardt's case, either the education innoculation didn't take, or Seymour Lipset is wrong. As an optimist, I'm on Lipset's side and prefer to suppose that Mr. Bernhardt is congenitally immune. Stand up, John Charles, let the whole world see what an irrational . education major looks like hope-" fully, you are a rare type. ' ' l!' James L.- Stevens, Jr. |
