Show Review 'Producers' Egg Lays Yuks H 11 mmr . director Mel Brooks. Brooks has given us in "The Producer" a movie that is funny without being sentimental and is, amazing as it may seem, highly original. Adolph's A Hit The story concerns two producers who collect money from hundreds of backers (Mostel's little old ladies) lad-ies) and promises each of them 50 or even 100 per cent of the profits of a show they intend to produce.. If the show folds, no questions will be asked and the producers can keep all the extra money they collected. To insure the failure of the show, Mostel and Wilder plan to produce a play, written by a slightly mad Nazi, that is entitled en-titled "Springtime For Hitler." Unfortunately, the play is a smash hit, and Mostel and Wilder frantic-ly frantic-ly trying- to find a way out of their predicament, in conjunction with the Nazi author, is comedy at its best. "The Producers" is currently showing at The Movie. By MIKE WHITNEY "How do you know actors are human beings? Have you ever eaten with one?" asks Max Beal-istock Beal-istock (Zero Mostel) of Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) in Mel Brooks' "The Producers." The actors who portrayed in "The Producers" are not human beings, and the same applies to the director direc-tor and the two producers. What they are is uproariously funny cari-citures, cari-citures, which are a lot more fun to watch than real people anyway. Mostel plays a once great broad-way broad-way producer who has now sunk so low he survives, on the money he gets from old ladies (hundreds of them) who believe that he is in love with them. Joke Hustler Mostel's performance can only be described as fantasticly hilarious. hilar-ious. He hustles through a myriad of sight gags and one line jokes and somehow manages to tie them together. Gene Wilder, as the neurotic little accountant who's innocent comment, com-ment, "Under the right circumstances circum-stances a producer could make more from a flop than from a success" suc-cess" sets Mostel's devious mind to work, is just as funny as Mostel. In fact at times, such as when he is nuzzling his "little blue blanket" blan-ket" or prancing through the park towing a big red balloon, he is even funnier than Mostel. Hippie Unbelievable Hippie Hitler Dick Shawn does not look like, sound like or act like a hippie. This could have been excused ex-cused if his performance had been comic, but it was not. Shawn can be ignored though, and Mostel and Wilder are more than enough to make up for him. The real reason for "The Producers" Pro-ducers" hilarity, however, is writer- |
