Show Journalism Honorary Students Win Prizes Arch L. Madsen, president of KSL Inc., and the Bonneville International In-ternational Corporation, was awarded the Kappa Tau Alpha journalism at the society's annual dinner held in the Union last week. The University Journalism Department De-partment awarded 14 scholarships and internships to undegraduate and seniors in the department. Eleven were newly initiated into Kappa Tau Alpha. Mr. Madsen, who delivered the Kappa Tau Alpha lecture, told journalists the biggest challenge they face is to effectively communicate com-municate significant information so that the majority of the people may understand and be motivated towards intelligent action. Earlier in the program, 14 scholarships schol-arships and internships were awarded to students in the journalism jour-nalism department. Internships David Block, junior journalism student, was awarded the Deseret News internship for the coming summer plus a $150 scholarship for the coming school year. Jane Lobell, Chronicle editor-in-chief for the 1968-69 school year, and Ron Scott were awarded the Salt Lake Tribune internships for the coming summer. Junior James Atkinson has been awarded the KCPX television internship. in-ternship. Randy Montgomery was awarded award-ed the KUTV television internship. Frank Mendonca won an internship intern-ship with the Magazine Publishers Association of New York City. Mendonca will spend 10 weeks on two nationally circulated magazines. maga-zines. Scholarships The Sigma Delta Chi $155 scholarship schol-arship award was awarded to Michael Mi-chael W. Varney, a BYU journalism journal-ism student, and Ed Ditterline of the University was awarded a scholarship totaling $270. In April, KALL radio conducted a contest for juniors and seniors in high school. One hundred students stu-dents produced a newspaper and reported on KALL radio. Miss Pat Jarvis, East High School, was awarded a $50 grant for the best radio report. Winner of the Presidential Award (University Merit Scholarship) Scholar-ship) was Nick Yengich. He won a $300 grant towards his school fees for the coming year. Minneapolis Tribune Charles Hayward won a $400 scholarship from the Minneapolis Tribune. The Minneapolis Tribune offers one $400 scholarship to each of the 55 accredited departments in the nation. Syracuse University has awarded award-ed Allan Smart $2,800 for use in their Mental Health Information Training program.- After completing complet-ing his first year successfully, he will be awarded $4000 for a one year internship. Smart is a graduate gradu-ate psychology student. The Deseret News sportswriters andp hotographers award went to Stanley Radford, Skyline High School. He participated with 50 other students during March writing writ-ing a news story under the pressure press-ure of a deadline. Outstanding; Senior Bruce Christensen was named the Sigma Delta Chi outstanding graduating senior. James Atkinson, Bruce Christensen, Christ-ensen, Ed Ditterline, Elman K.
