Show yST ' I J; t' I .- On display in the University Library, this graphic arts design is part of the plan of a graduate student to give the University a symbol, which would make it distinct among U.S. universities. 'IPs Visually Unorganized' Consistent elements of design throughout the University campus would stimulate the concept of a contemporary institution which people would remember, said a graphic design major. James Rowley, a second year graduate student, who currently has a display explaining his concept con-cept of a uniformly designed university uni-versity in the west study area on the third floor of the libray, feels the university has no particular symbol or symbols that separates it from any other college across the country. Unorganized Campus "When you think of the University Univer-sity of Utah, you can't think of anything visually to make the cam pus clear in your mind. It's unorganized," un-organized," Rowley said. He said if the university made the attempt to use uniform designs, it would probably become one of the most popular educational institutions in-stitutions in the country. "It's too bad that this campus doesn't have anything to tie it together to-gether visually," commented Row-loy. Row-loy. "The students would be more look. Right now, the only unified aware if this place had a unified look is thse ugly green parking signs." Trend Setter "This is all a part of creating a look and feel of a contemporary University. It is beyond question that this college would like to think of itself as a trend setter." As an example, Rowley used the current Library. He said the campus cam-pus administrators were very style conscious or else they would have constructed a library which looked something like the Park Bldg. some thing which is outdated in design. He continued one problem prev-elant prev-elant on most college campuses is administration insists on deciding most designing programs. "Designing "De-signing work is best handled by experts. College administrators in most casses would not think themselves them-selves able to handle a computer, stated Rowley, so it's inconsistent (Continued on Page 4) 'U Needs A Symbol' (Continued from Page 1) they feel they can best decide how to design symbols. Co-ordinate Effects "Visually, we need something more than this campus has," sai Rowley.
