In its fourth year last summer, sum-mer, Dr. Fowler was responsible for the presence of such talents on campus as Henry Mancini, Paul Horn and Ralph Pena. Dr. Fowler is an accomplished guitarist himself. He studied classical classi-cal guitar under Andre Segovia in Italy in 1956. Since then, due to the stage band movement, he has become be-come interested in jazz. Dr. "Bill," as he is affectionately called, began the first stage band at the University Univer-sity a swell as receiving the first Ph.D. in mAssic Classically oriented, orient-ed, he has been the recipient of national and international composi- tion honors, and still composes lor the modern dance department on campus. I We as a University would like to thank and honor Dr. Fowler for 1 the modern dance department on complished in the field of jazz. j This Week We Honor Committee Dr. William Fowler, professor of music, has a long record of success on the University campus, but his work with the Intermountain Jazz Festival for the past two years has brought him most satisfaction. As the representative for the Intermountain Inter-mountain area on the board of governors, gov-ernors, it is Dr. Fowler's annual responsibility to coordinate and direct di-rect the scheduling of 15 bands who participated in this year's jazz festival, held at Highland High School. Bands Getting Better "Our bands are good and getting better every year," commented Dr. Fowler. The University had four entrees en-trees in the competition Friday and Saturday, all of which Dr. Fowler was very proud to have represent this school. National Educational Services, in their bulletin last year, said, "Utah was the fastest growing grow-ing area in stage bands in the nation." na-tion." And much of this growing interest in-terest is due to the summer camps sponsored by the University for |
