Show CIA at University Aprilmen Protest Campus Recruiters By J. BAUMAN and SUSAN WILLIAMS Chronicle Staff Writers Members of the April Committee, are considering possible demonstrations demon-strations aimed against Central Intelligence In-telligence Agency recruiters. The CIA will be recruiting on campus begining Monday; and plan to be at the University Placement Center Cen-ter through February. April Committee spokesman Mike Waters said "I don't feel that the University is a proper place or that any place is a proper place for CIA recruitment I think the idea behind the CIA is repugnent to the basic American ideals. I don't think the CIA's actions are in any way helpful to an already too-up-tight world situation." Asked how far he felt opponents to the CIA's presence at the University Uni-versity should go in demonstration their disapproval, Waters added "I recall a quotation Bruce Philips once told me his hand-to-hand combat com-bat instructor had told him : 'Fighting 'Fight-ing isn't right, so thereis no right way to fight so anything goes.' Because what the CIA does is not right there is no right or wrong way to stop their recruiting. I think anything short of physical violence to the CIA recruiters themselves, goes including civil disobedience." Another Committee member informed in-formed the Chronicle that the April-men April-men will meet Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Union's Room 312 to decide just what action, if any, should be taken in regard to the recruitment. She continued, "We think that controversial con-troversial issues such as Dow Chemical, Military, and CIA recruitment re-cruitment on campus should be decided de-cided by the students rather than the administration. Our particular objection to the CIA presence on campus is based upon our belief that CIA activities in connection with the National Student Association Associa-tion are a violation of the First to participate in a demonstration of their disapproval of the CIA presence. However, I think it would be illegitimate for the April Committee Com-mittee to attempt to block the recruitment re-cruitment center, and such things have happened elsewhere. I feel they have no right to deny any other student use of the facilities of the placement center. They have no more right to do this than anyone has a right to refuse the April Committee their privilege to peace- s ful protest." Added Assistant Dean of Students Stu-dents Peter Grundfossen, "I couldn't could-n't say what the University's position posi-tion would be if ' the April Com-mittep Com-mittep attemntprl to hlnplr tho on. Amendment if the CIA is following follow-ing you around, listening to whatever what-ever you say, you're not really free to say whatever you like, right? "We agree with the need for an international investigative organization; organi-zation; however, there is no place for a domestic spy system in a free and democratic society." In a Chronicle interview Dean of Students Virginia Frobes said "The CIA is a -perfectly legitmate national association it is entirely proper for it to recruit on a public campus. I think it is also appropriate approp-riate if the April Committee wants trance to the Placement Center. We have a Student Behavior Committee Com-mittee that prosecutes alleged violations vio-lations of University regulations. . . One of the functions the CIA serves at the University is informing the students about CIA operations as much as security considerations allow it to and to give students information about job opportunities. These interviews come under very much the same kind of framework as the speakers program if these activists try to restrict the CIA's recruitment and information program, pro-gram, they are attempting to restrict re-strict free speech." |
