Show Cowboys In Sugar Bowl battle, the most appearance for any one team. USC Goes To Rose Bowl This year's Rose Bowl will likely feature Southern California against Minnesota. USC probably clinched its berth with last Saturday's victory vic-tory over UCLA, while Minnesota will get the bid if and when they sew up the Big 10 crown. Second-ranked Tennessee, who may be the nation's best team, is a cinch for one of the prized Orange Bowl bids. Competition for the Vols will probably be provided by the surging Oklahoma Sooners. The Big Eight power has been moving up in the national rankings lately with victories over Colorado, Missouri Miss-ouri and Nebraska. The remainder of the major bowls shape up as follows: Syracuse Syra-cuse vs. either Florida State or Miami, in the Gator Bowl, Ala- " bama will take on the Southwest Conference Champion in the Cotton Bowl. That conference is still very much up in the air and any one of four teams could pull out a victory, vic-tory, but Texas A&M or Texas, who clash next week, appear to have the best chance. The runner-up in the Southwest will likely take in strong Colorado in the Bluebonnet Bowl and Mississippi Missi-ssippi will meet either the University Univers-ity of Texas at El Paso, Clemson or North Carolina State in the Sun Bowl. Brigham Young got the nod as the local representative to the hard water toilet bowl. That's the way the annual classics class-ics seem to stack up for 1967, and it looks like another great collection collec-tion of exciting games featuring a group of the best teams to come out of the college ranks in a long time. It finally happened a Western Athletic Conference team has received re-ceived a bid to one of the major New Year's Day Bowl Classics. The Wyoming Cowboys, who rapped up their second straight conference championship last week, were notified noti-fied yesterday of their invitation to the annual New Year's Sugar Bowl contest. The game should be one of the best, with stiff competition for; the Pokes coming from- tough Louisiana State University. For the last few years football played in the; WAG has compared favorably with the" pigskin antics of any area in the' nation, but for one reason or another WAC squads have always been overlooked when the post-season contests roll around. This year, however, the Cowboys racked up another undefeated unde-feated season and stretched their winning streak to fourteen games making them the only undefeated, untied major college team in the land. With a showing like that they could not be passed over again. LSU Could Be National Contender LSU has compiled a not too impressive im-pressive 5-3-1 overall record going into its final game next Saturday with old rival Tulane. However, the Tiger's three losses have come in close, hard-fought contests, and all three games were lost by a total of only ten points. If the luck had gone the other way just a little bit, LSU might very well be 9-C and a strong contender for national championship honors. While Wyoming will be competing compet-ing in its first major bowl, Louisiana Louisi-ana State seems to be a favorite in the New Orleans area. The Tigers will be in their eighth Sugar Bowl |
