Show For the last few weeks the in-termountain in-termountain football fan has heard a lot about mental attitude and getting get-ting players "up" for games. 'Mental 'Men-tal attitude is important, in order for a player to give his "all" and help the team effort he must be in the proper mental state before and during the actual contest. This Saturday for the Ufah-BYU game in Provo, however, there will be no trouble getting the Utes up t for what head coach Mike Gid-dings Gid-dings considers "perhaps the best rivalry in college football." and coming off a victory over Arizona the Redskins will certainly be menially men-ially ready. As for Brigham Young, the Cougars feel just as strongly about this annual contest and despite de-spite their drubbing last week at the hands of UTEP, they will be ready also. Evenly Matched So Saturday's annual head knocker knock-er will be just that, a real head knocker. The two football teams are as evenly matched as any "U" and "Y" teams have been in the last few seasons. The team that comes out the victor will be the squad that hits the hardest and gets one or two important breaks. The Redskins have one of the strongest defensive lines in the WAC and should have little trouble stopping the Cougar running game. As a result, Coach Hudspeth will probably instruct his quarterback-ing quarterback-ing trio to put the pigskin in the air in an attempt to score over the Ute defense. This presents a real challenge for the Utah defensive backfield, but with another tough pass rush by the line and if Jerome Lawson, who anchors the backfield, can turn in another great performance perform-ance it could be a sad day in Cougar Cou-gar Town. The Cats will get their first look at Redskin quarterback Jack Gehr-ke. Gehr-ke. who is the mainstay of the Ute offensive attack. Jack was injured and missed last years BYU coniest. Gehrke broke loose last weekend against the Arizona Wildcats passing pass-ing for 176 yards and rushing for another 56 boosting himself into third place in individual offensive statistics. - If the Utah ground attack bogs down which is unlikely with the. talent, of Charlie Smith and Steve Molnar in the Ute backfield, Gehrke Gehr-ke could open the game up with an extensive passing attack of his own. His favorite receivers, Jack Andrews and Ray Groth may have a field day against, the poorest pass defense in the WAC. The Cougars Cou-gars have allowed their opposition an amazing 273 yards per game through the air. Screaming I'ans The only possible advantage that Brigham Young could have over the Utes is the home field and the masses of screaming Cougar fans. However, tickets are still available for the Utah fans, so let's fill up all the alloted Redskin seats and show some real team support. |
