Show New Obscenity? Saturday's game was demoralizing although the Utes put up a good fight we came out on the short end of the stick. Defeat isn't all that bad, in fact it could prove to be advantageous advantag-eous if we rebound and squash our remaining opponents. But some students displayed items that marred Saturday's game. The sign carried around the track by a few students brought embarrassment to the University and to our fine football foot-ball team. The University has come under much criticism from the community and from the newspapers downtown. Hack Miller in his column in the Deseret News said it was the worst sign he'd seen in his 33-year association with the University of Utah. John Mooney, of the Tribune also criticized Saturday's display of crudeness. University students should in the future confine their posters and rivalry to displays that are in better taste. Saturday's Satur-day's display only injured our cause on and off the playing field. On the other hand, we take issue with Hack Miller's statement that "this was the worst display by University of Utah students." We don't feel Saturday's display was ultra-spectacular ultra-spectacular for college students we are basically the same today to-day as the college students were 20 years ago.. We recall reading the Chronicles of the 40's their cartoons were some of the most obscene we have come across; "better" than those carried in Playboy, Topper, and Dude. So with all due respect to those who attacked the University, Univer-sity, we believe students haven't changed that much. But despite de-spite the precedents of the past, there is no room for poor taste on the athletic field. |
