Show Pokes Corral Utah By BRUCE ROBERTS Chronicle Sports Editor In a performance that even Tom Mix couldn't match, the Cowboys of Wyoming corraled Utah's offense and rode off in the sunset with a 28-0 victory over the Redskins in Ute Stadium Saturday. Wyoming was the first team the Utes have met this year who were both physically and mentally superior. Coach Mike Giddings of Utah knew that his Utes couldn't make mistakes against the Pokes and in the words of Giddings, "We made 'em, and they beat us." Wyoming turned two Utah fumbles into touchdowns and picked up a field goal after a Gehrke interception. "They played a near perfect football game," said Giddings, who was in agreement with the 28,055 fans on hand for the Western Athletic Conference encounter. Wyoming Corrals Utah (Continued from Page 7) Pokes Were Overwhelming Rarely will a college football team turn in such an overwhelming all-around game as Wyoming did against Utah. Wyoming's defense alone was enough to prove that the Cowboys are again a national power, as they held the previously potent Utah offense to a mere 121 yards total offense. The front wall of Tim Gottberg, Larry Nels, Steve Adamson, Mike Dirks, and Jack Bowen were relentless in their pursuit of Jack Cehrke and the Utah backfield. It was a rare moment when quarterback Gehrke found time to throw, and when he did, it seemed that Poke defenders de-fenders Vic Washington and Dick Speights were all over his receivers. And for the umpteenth time this season, the Utes were burned by their mental errors. After setting a WAC record last week in yards penalized penal-ized against New Mexico, Utah still hadn't gotten over its over-eagerness and was racked for another 93 yards in penalties. Several of these were key calls that either foiled a Utah drive or sustained a Wyoming surge. The only shining light for the Utes was a better-than-average job done against Wyoming's rushing game. The Pokes only managed 108 yards on the ground and admitted that the Utes were one of the hardest-hitting hardest-hitting clubs they had met this year, A big disappointment for the Cowboys was Jerry DePoyster, who missed three of four extra points and two of three field goals. Admittedly Ad-mittedly DePoyster had a long day after being grounded several times by vengeful Redskins. As jovial BYU coach Tommy Hudspeth once admitted during the fourth quarter of a previous Wyoming Wyo-ming rout over the Cats, that after a while even he was humming "Ragtime Cowboy" as he watched the Pokes demolish his crew. And that was the case Saturday, as Wyoming Wy-oming proved to Utah that they are once again the team to be reckoned with in the Western Athletic Ath-letic Conference.
