Show 2. Generous and honest though the Chronicle's intentions inten-tions were in PRE-reviewing Dance '67, it is better newspap-ering newspap-ering (even campus-wise) to refrain from promotion in reviews. re-views. Better to review the opening op-ening concert of the. event and let the chips fall. They fell differently opening night than as reported by Mr. Gray from the preceding Tuesday rehearsal. rehear-sal. 3. I'm a Dance fan from way back. Like any group, the RDT will grow healthier through honest, informed, objective criticism than through any other single factor (outside doubling of their Rockefeller grant) . Lowell M. Durham Bravo Editor: Bravo to Timme Helzer to fi his article, "Where the Actix i is, Baby!" in April 20 Mentis. .'!" We are not reminded oftet enough , of why we are here ot " campus, breathing this vx demic air. In the scramble to get knowl- -P edge, we find we have accm "fd ulated shelves full of textbooks 'i and volumes of class notes, bet "X have missed the essence ol to education. ; P1 Those who haven't read this article should find a copy and take the time to read it and df i cide where they stand. Let's have more of the saint' Laurel Smi- -S -a Gripe! Editor: With all respect to Mr. Segel, Mr. Patel and others who object ob-ject to the number of Greek affiliates holding office, I'd like to take issue with the complaints. com-plaints. The Greeks can be justly criticized for some practices, but supporting their own qualified qual-ified candidates is not one of them. If we independents lack the social acumen of ants, who work together for the common good, then maybe student government, gov-ernment, which demands cooperation, co-operation, should be left to the capable. (This is assuming that the efforts of the capable benefit bene-fit the entire student body.) With few reservations, I believe be-lieve the opportunities for an independent to grow socially and intellectually are greater than for an affiliate. But there is no advantage to being a jack-independent, as most independents in-dependents are in effect though not in attitude. Hearing about non-Greek apathy is wearisome; so are the unfounded gripes about the Greeks. Becky Foster Good Rebuttal Editor: Nick Snow's excellent letter of explanation re: the Chronicle's Chron-icle's coverage of Dance '67 prompts this brief rejoinder. 1. Mr. Gray's recommendation recommenda-tion to the Chronicle by the Dance Department speaks well for his competence in Dance. It does not, however, guarantee guaran-tee competency as reviewer. Suppose Maestro Abravanel recommended that the Tribune hire a critic of his choice? Or University Theatre? Or Utah Civic Ballet? Or even Jack Gardner? I have a hunch they would stick with Mooney & Co. This pattern makes for good promotion and crusading but for poor journalistic reviewing-criticism. reviewing-criticism. There is a difference. differ-ence. Promotion, news-releases plugging, slanting should be left to the performing organizations' organiz-ations' promotion department. |
