Show Center Gets $450,000 for Expansion The Computer Center has received re-ceived a $450,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to expand its present Univac 1103 system. Dr. Louis Schmittroth, computer com-puter center director, said new equipment will be added to 1108 during the coming year "to increase in-crease its accessibility." The equipment will include a small computer which will be connected to the 1108 for graphical gra-phical input-output data. "Drawings "Draw-ings can be read and stored for future reference and trans-formatio trans-formatio n," Schmittroth explained. ex-plained. The new addition will allow the 1103 to create drawings and display them on TV screens at the computer center. More Memory Units The National Science Foundation Founda-tion grant will be used to buy extra memory units for the 1103, making it possible for rmre departments to use the computer com-puter simultaneously. The Center will also purchase a teletype multiplexer with a 32-teletype 32-teletype control board. Schmitt- roth said information is presently pres-ently being fed to the machine by punch card readers an expensive and cumbersome operation. op-eration. "The new teletype system sys-tem will allow computer response re-sponse with'.n seconds, and at less C02t." New teletype stations sta-tions will also be installed on campus to aTow direct inquiry into files of data stored in the 1108 memory styem. Capacity There "The capacity is already there," Schmittroth said. "We have the largest University computer com-puter facility in the intermoun-ta'n intermoun-ta'n area with a storage capacity capa-city of 132 million characters about 22 million fords. But the new equipment purchased with the National Science Foundation funds will make the 1103 more efficient for the entire campus community." Practically all departments on the campus now use the Computer Com-puter Center facilities for research re-search and teaching. Schmittroth Schmitt-roth said at least 2,000 students currently find needs for computer com-puter services and the new equipment will "make the experience ex-perience more efficient and meaningful for them." |
