"My duty," he said, "is to the people of the State of California, and if it requires that I cut spending on education, I'll do just that!" Faced with the possibility of a teachers' strike against his higher education plans, the Republican governor gov-ernor received momentary applause from the demonstrators when it was discovered that he'd cancelled the Oregon trip to be present. Governor Should Be There "I don't think any group should come to the Capitol with the expressed purpose of delivering something to the governor and have the governor gov-ernor be absent," he said. Booing resumed when he announced his de parture and concluded with, "I believe nothing I could say would create an open mind in some of you on this particular subject." Causes Disfavor? Reagon fell into disfavor Jan. 20 when he joined the Board of Regents and fired University of California President Clark Kerr, climaxing a battle between the two men that had been raging rag-ing since the governor had assumed office. Rumors were widespread among faculty members mem-bers that it would only be a matter of time be- j fore the relatively liberal Kerr would be forced out. "On Nov. 8, we came back from the looking glass to find that California can't live in never-never never-never land as it has been for the last several years," Reagan told reporters Jan. 20. "We would like to welcome the academic community into the cold world of reality with us." Naiads selected fourteen new members last week.
