Show Apartheid Breaks In S. Africa Baboons Are In! Baboons may be the cheap labor of the future, suggests a Cape Town University anatomist, Dr. R. Trevor-Jones. He maintains that baboons are one of South Africa's national assets, ' which should be cultivated and developed. DR TREVOR-JONES suggests that they be turned into "drone workers." They could easily be trained to become efficent golf Sdies-maybe a little short on the advice, but equally short on criticism. Baboons have been known to do useful work in many parts of South Africa. One assisted a farmer in herding sheep. Another was trained to drive a tractor. In the Southwest South-west railway station of Uitenhage one was successfully trained to act as a porter and odd-jobs man. Among methods of developing the working baboon, Dr. Trevor-Jones Trevor-Jones suggests a simple electro-cauter electro-cauter brain operation which would remove certain irritable tendencies in the animal. "In South Africa we have a wonderful won-derful opportunity to develop a docile, intelligent working animal," he said. |
