Show Cal Tech's Great for Pranks j By JOHN THOMAS The latest prank to decorate our campus cam-pus I'm referring to the 'hand' so artistically ar-tistically painted by the small-mind with the can of white spray-paint reminds me of what the genuses at Caltech do for laughs. These enlightened wizards ( surely must hold the trophy for the well planned practical joke, a few grades up, I might add, from our Ginzburg artist or the BYU flying saucer balloons. bal-loons. Caltech's oldest tradition tra-dition is the Senior Ditch, a day when the weary seniors lay down The burden of discovering the date of "D" day is left to the underclassmen who use bribery, hidden microphones and every other device known to the experts ex-perts of espionage. But the real merriment merri-ment comes when the seniors return to find what their crafty adversaries have left in their supposedly forgotten little nooks. Sometimes the pranksters fill a room from floor to ceiling with straw, ice cubes or manure and once, even a huge weather balloon filled with water. One returning senior found a model-T Ford with the motor running. Others have found such items as a mixing cement ce-ment mixer, an outhouse and a beach complete with sand, suds and mannequins. manne-quins. And if all else fails, the cunning rogues simply wall up the doorway with bricks. For "The World's Longest Yo-Yo Run," The Caltech Yo-Yo Society began experiments with a regulation Yo-Yo, using thread instead of string to set the world's record Yo-Yo run. After many attempts they succeeded in a run of 30 feet. A successful run consisted of dropping drop-ping the Yo-Yo and allowing it to return to the hand unassisted. Bigger and more elaborate Yo-Yos were developed until the champion was devised, a massive . plywood beast which was ... . incredible world rec d o ' : two-and-a-half-feet It next try will have to be Gate Bridge. It seems, however, that the underclassmen feel left out of the fun and so gain their revenge by entering and messing-up the seniors' unguarded rooms. Or are the rooms unguarded? No indeed. Elaborate safety devices are constructed to trap the unwary, such as a structure of two-by-fours, rigged to fall when the key plank is disturbed. It's rumored that the electrical elec-trical engineers have the wiliest defenses. |
