In the pole vault, Arizona's Ed Martensen cleared the bar at 16 feet 4V4 inches in a triangular meet last week. The previous best mark recorded by a Western West-ern Athletic vaulter was 16 feet Y2 inch, posted two years ago by John Rose, or Arizona State. A battle of potential national champions will highlight the triangular meet slated for Ute Stadium this Saturday. The Utes will host sister schools Utah State and Brigham Young. The field events are scheduled to get under way at 1:30 p.m. and track events at 2 p.m. The feature event of the day will pit the NCAA indoor champion Jerry Cerrula of USU against BYU's Al Rockwell in the high hurdles. Track and field enthusiasts won't be dissappointed if they are expecting another fine season in the Western Athletic Conference. Already, early season performances per-formances in five of the 17 events have surpassed the best competitive marks ever recorded in the league's brief history, and other new bests may be recorded in the remaining seven weeks of the season. THE NEW best performances have been posted in the 440-yard relay, shot put, discus throw, two mile run, and pole vault. Carrying the baton for New Mexico in the 440-yard relay are four of the best sprinters in the conference. Bernie Rivers, Steve Camaniti, Ken Head and Rene Mattison have legged the distance in 40.1 seconds, to eclipse the old WAC mark of :40.3, set by the Lobos last year. BRIGHAM YOUNG'S Ken Patera Pa-tera heaved the 16 pound ball 61 feet 6 inches two weeks ago in the BYU invitational to outdo out-do the 60-2 mark set last year by Mike Blanco, another Cougar, who hasn't rounded into form this season.
