Show Ft. Douglas The Governor's Ft. Douglas Study Committee recommended recom-mended Monday that the University and the State Parks and Recreation Commission should receive most of the Ft. Douglas property exclusive of the Red Butte Canyon area. The committee suggested that the University's requests re-quests be granted for the majority of the "vacant but developable de-velopable lands," including an industrial research park which eventually would extend to 300 acres. The report recommended that 100 acres be trans-, ferred to the University immediately for development of a research park, and that other transfers of 50 acre tracts be made as justified by growth of the park. Although the University only requested 250 acres of the old Fort, the committee alloted 300 acres in their recommendations. With the rapid growth of the University, (projected to 27,000 students in 1970) more room for expansion will be necessary. With the addition of Ft. Douglas (scheduled to be phased out as a military installation by 1970) to the University Uni-versity President Fletcher's dream of a research park may well become a reality. This park would draw industrial research and development de-velopment projects to the campus and because of the facilities and programs they would bring, make graduate study, particularly in the sciences, a more complete educational edu-cational experience. |
