Show Down The Draft We understand from informed sources in Washington Wash-ington that the popular song "Mac the Knife" has undergone a strong revival since the Secretary of Defense decided that we could well do without the "six-month-wonders" in 'the Army and Air Force Reserves. Re-serves. We mention it only because a number t of university uni-versity students are rejoicing over the prospect of being transfered to the National Guard. We can only approve of McNamara's action since we too are of eligible age and like to see the institutions institu-tions of militarism dismantled. We're hoping that this is just the first of a sequence of measures designed to do away with the draft. The next step wiuld naturally call for the abolition of the National Guard, the modern day combination of the Minutemen and a state militia. If normal military mil-itary efficiency is maintained, this should occur shortly short-ly after the law has been changed and the expense of transferring hundreds of reserve units to the guard has been incurred. Then should follow the final blow that will do away with one of the few remaining institutions of involuntary servitude. From an educational standpoint, the abolition of the draft would be of tremendous benefit to the colleges col-leges and universities of the nation. Enrollment should decline immediately by about 25 per cent when half of the male university population drops out after they have gained their new-won freedom from the draft boards. It is unfortunate that our institutions of higher learning have become sanctuaries for refugees from thje oppression of the draft and it's high time we changed this policy. Think of the savings ! Think of the available classrooms! class-rooms! Think of all of the oppressed 1-A's. Let's get going, Mac, the Great Society can never put up with what we see as a violation of due process of law. |
