Show Letters to the Editor An Overt Action? DearitEhas rcome to my attention that on Monday, Oct 12 Daily Utah Chronicle contained an editorial concerning the 1 sonal assets and holdings of Dr . Ernest Wilkinson. I have" J the article and if I can, I would like to comment on some 0 i contents, that the voting public can have a better understand of the issue. 1 In the first place I found it rather an overt action for newspaper to use a paid political announcement as a basis ' an editorial. It has always been my impression that an m? always went to both sources, found out their stand on an iss, then wrote his opinion. I would hope that since I am a stud! here at the U.( I could expect that from the editors of my sc;! newspaper. THE ARTICLE states that the rooms rent for $1,000 a mo J This is evidently a misprint by the newspaper, because we w that Senator Moss checks out everything himself and he won never miss the fact that these rental units are let out for tZ to $200 a month on up. We also know that Senator Moss w0i2 never miss the fact that Dr. Wilkinson owns the hotel in Tea-like Tea-like I would own the Hilton Hotel chain if I held 2,000 shaia of stock. Might I also ask you to consider this fact; Dr. Wilkinso-. Wilkinso-. lives here in Utah. He works here in Utah, and if I understatj 'my business principals correctly, the profits from business an paid to the owners of the stock, and since Dr. Wilkinson is itv in Utah, I suggest to you that Utah is receiving the benefits oi any interests Ernest has outside the state. Personally I own sou shares of Texas Gulf Sulfur. But when I receive a dividend check I spend it here in Utah. THE EDITORIAL does carry a bit of profound advice hoi ever. The last sentence states this: "But if Utah is going to w a fair shake in Congress," (by the way, Dr. Wilkinson is ns, ning for the Senate informed editors?), we need a man wkt really cares." Well, I have got to know Dr. Wilkinson and I have felt the greatness of the man, and he has the greatest car; and concern for the people of Utah and the government of tli United States than most any man alive. And since Senator Moss has gone into his private life, let me go a little bit deeper. Many years ago, before there was anyone on the pu scene by the name of Frank Moss, Ernest Wilkinson had a wj made out leaving half of his estate to the Brigham Young University. Univer-sity. This money will go into the construction of new buildings thereby providing jobs for Utahns. And it will go towards paying pay-ing the salaries of teachers in the state of Utah. And to suggest in the light of this fact, that Ernest is not interested in Utah dc not augur the truth. SENATOR MOSS has alluded many times to the fact that Dr. Wilkinson has been running a "fear and smear" campaigt but I suggest to you that the shoe is on the other foot. Senate Moss has run full page ads in Ogden, Salt Lake and Provo papers calling Dr. Wilkinson and Senator Goldwater the Goldwate Twins. He has bought full page ads about hotels and has maii crass jokes about age, money and relations; and I refer to tit debate of Oct. 9 in the Union Ballroom. Might I also suggest that Senator Moss in his next full page ad print that Ernes: Wilkinson was in the group with 37 fewer cavities. Dr. Wilkinson has referred only to Senator Moss' public record, his private life is not part of the campaign. Jim Crofts State Chairman, Students for Wilkinson |
