Show Prof Praises Sorority as Police Force Dr. David Riesman, sociologist from Harvard University, Thursday Thurs-day discussed questions raised by University students. He talked about problems of fraternities and sororities, and the civil rights situation. sit-uation. Dr. Riesman noted that the sororities sor-orities serve as society's police force by insuring sorority girls meet only socially acceptable men. This function, he said, is particularly par-ticularly necessary at state universities uni-versities because upper-class girls have more opportunities to meet lower-class men. Dr. Riesman observed that junior and senior men tend to drop their fraternity activities because they find that they would rather be "doing something else." The bonds of brotherhood offered by the fraternity fra-ternity are dropped because the excitement of the learning process offers new activities. ON NEGRO STUDENTS, Dr. Riesman observed that they "are slightly worse off than women in college." The Negro, he said, has to do two things: Assert his dignity dig-nity and measure up to the standards stand-ards of the whites. |
