In his topic "Socialism and Nationalism Na-tionalism and-Their Impact on the UAR" he defined these two goals as: 1. The unification of the Arab World through Arab Nationalism. 2. Application of the socialist system as a scientific philosophy and the picture which the Arab society so-ciety would take. . "Arab nationalism has had deep roots" Mr. Hashad said. "They witnessed wit-nessed the same currents, of history his-tory and were conquered by the same people." Islamic conquest was one of the factors that brought these countries even closer together. togeth-er. But Mr. Hashad explained, "It was the Egyptian people .that assumed as-sumed grave responsibilities in the interest of the 'whole region." One of the examples he mentioned- was defending the Arab world against the first wave of European colonialism. colonial-ism. . . . - . . . After World War II, Arab nationalism nation-alism sprung up again against ""the imperialism which had a strong hold in the Arab world and its products, Israel." These : factors alone he said were "able to create a common hope and came the many victories for Arab nationalism such as nationalizing the Suez Canal, and standing the triple attack by England, France, Israel and the Algerian Al-gerian Independence." . - Then moving. " into the second sphere of discussion Mr. Hashad said the UAR's first socialist goal is economic growth and welfare. He said that this can be accomplished by "the major skeletons of production produc-tion and public services operating under the framework of public ownership." The second goal for socialism is in the field of industry.- Already the majority of heavy and mining industries are under public owner- snip aitnougn private ownership is possible. Light industry is not regulated by the government, he continued. Another - point brought up was that the government is not against the private ownership of land although al-though it does regulate the amount of land a family may have. In concluding Mr. Hashad said that the Arab states are working towards a "goal of unity" and that the UAR under the socialistic system sys-tem has contributed greatly to this idea. |
