Show Hut 9 Jteaia (J By STEVC WILLIAMS WHY DOES ST. NICK GO DOWN THE CHIMNEY? Why is Santa pictured as ccming down the chimney? One story goes back to pre-Christian Germany and Ilertha, goddess of the home. At the winter solstice, which is abjut the time of Christmas, families kindled a fire of fir bough inside their homes, and the goddess supposedly sup-posedly descended through the smoke to bring them good luck. The legend carried over into old England, where Santa was j credited with coming down the chimney to clean it ox" soot so good luck could come it. Latest figures indicate that .average length of time that families keep their TV sets on is 6.02 hours a clay. Wonder if that includes all the TV "family," "fam-ily," or just the ones who also live there when the TV ain't on? We heard the gals at the Hong Kong have been taking some abuse because thsy were unable to locate the city marshal immediately im-mediately when local residents phoned in. The Hong Kong was selected select-ed as the central call spot for the fire department and police department, because it's the only place that's open 24 hours a day. When someone calls the fire department a waitress takes the call, sounds the siren, and stands by the phone, letting the cash customers wait, until a volunteer vol-unteer fireman calls in on the direct wire. When the marshall is called, she turns on a signal light, and when the marshal phones in, or goes in, she gives him the call. But it's rarely the marshal S-t can take the call immediately. 0- - The marshals are continually patrolling the entire city, up (streets and down alleys, protecting protect-ing you and your family and your property. Every so often they cruise past the signal light and if it's burning they check with the waitress at the Hong Kong. The management and employees em-ployees at the Hong Kong are doing these favors for the city and the public as a courtesy not as a duty. When the waitresses wait-resses take abuse because they can't locate the marshal as promptly as the caller thinks they should, it isn't thei fault. And they are not required to perform this public service, and they certainly are not required to take abuse from anyone. IVext time, how about thanking thank-ing them for trying. City Marshal Ronald Gala calls attention to the many ways motorists are making left turns around the Christmas tree at the bank corner. He says the proper way is to make the left turn around the tree not cut the corner because by turning sharply instead of going around the tree there is a "blind spot and the motorist making the turn cannot see approaching cars So when making a left turn, be sure to go around the U-turns around the tree are prohibited. And still on the trafifc theme: The City of Milford has jurisdiction juris-diction over traffic on the UP property west of the depot, and a few warning tickets have been given for improper parking. Some of the motorists receiving the warnings have challenged authority of the marshals to issue the tickets. In the first place, since the private thoroughfare is inside the city limits and is generally used by the public, they have traffic control authority, bec-ondly, bec-ondly, the U P specifically gave them such authority. Sample of what reporters do when they write items in a rush with something else on . their minds: . "Due to a knee injury, the Dorothy Kizer- Beauty Shop will be closed for a week.' Back in the Roarin Twenties, when the higher the skirt the smarter the fashion, beauty-shops beauty-shops were used to pretty up the dimples in the knees, but we don't think they still do. Guess it must have been Dorothy's knee that got injured. Babe Ruth reminds all children chil-dren not to forget the annual B & J Christmas party, immediately imme-diately after the matinee on Sunday. Santa will be on hand to say Hello to the children, and pass out Christmas stockings. Ernie Linfcrd in his Monday Tribune column points cut that in Utah bread is taxed higher than beer. And with the national na-tional brewing industry complaining com-plaining about the high tax on beer, we can only conclude that Utah is in pretty bad shape when they have to tax bread so highly.
