Show 9 jbututa, Qui 9 Jteaia By STEVii WILLIAMS Brack Lee told us most politicians pol-iticians are trying to find a way to hit the taxpayer without with-out slapping the voter. Dunno when Milford has had the lineup of state celebrities for a celebration that they had for the Forty-Niners. A few years ago we had some entertainment-world big-shots, but the best Forty-Niners we can v remember was this year, when the Governor of our state (and his First Lady of course); Ted Cannon of the Deseret News and Dan Valentine of The Tribune were here to help with the officiating offi-ciating chores, help us celebrate, cele-brate, and enjoy themselves. And our appreciation for their appearance is the greater because be-cause we saw them "off guard," when they were not before the public's curious eye, and could let down and relax a little. We build up to a celebration, enjoy it, then letdown and re- l turn to our normal way of liv ing. Our visitors aren't that privileged. They have to build up to a new celebration or new public appearance almost every day of the week, and no "relaxing" in between times. So a special Thanks to Gov. and very gracious Mrs. Lee, a low bow and tip of the hat to Ted Cannon, and a special Valentine Val-entine to Dan Valentine, for their appearance at the Milford American Legion Forty-Niners. We enjoyed your visit and we invite you to come down to see us again. While we are on a back-patting spree, Milford Legion officials, particularly Ray Walker and Gordon Murdock, have asked us to extend a special thanks to the horsemen and the residents of Minersville and Beaver, for their enthusiastic support of the annual Milford celebration. Gordon and Ray used about the same words: "Without them we wouldn't have had the real celebration our Forty-Niners turned out to be. Tell 'em they better reserve a special section in the grandstand, for Milford x Legionnaires, when Minersville puts on their Fourth of July Celebration, and Beaver has their big day on the 24th." And, from I Dunno, let's keep the celebrations that way all the county turn out for the Forty-Niners in Milford, the Fourth in Minersville, and the Twenty-fourth Twenty-fourth (and 21st and 23rd) in Beaver. If we make these real, honest-to-goodness county celebrations, cele-brations, and respect each others' oth-ers' dates, they'll all be real whing-dings. And I Dunno wants to add his '' -- personal thanks to the Legion's gratitude, to Dan and Ted for accepting our invitation to be among the Forty-Niner celebrants. cele-brants. In our younger days we had a stint at about every kind of rough and tough work they had invented, and we've sweat and seen others sweat a lot of salt water through the pores, but last Saturday when Mayor Ray's horse hadn't arrived from Delta, he was really pouring (Continued on Page l'wo) HERE'S MORE ABOUT j IDUNNO Continued from Page One the moisture into the ground. Circleville Mayor Hank Gott-fredson Gott-fredson rode "some old horse we pulled off the plow yesterday," according to Hizzoner from Circleville, Cir-cleville, and wound up crossing the wire two lengths in front of Ray and Champo Rojo, and everyone enjoyed the race, but lots of observers enjoyed Ray's sweating about as much as they did the race. I Incidentally, that Champo Rojo is quite a piece of horse flesh. We don't know whether he could beat the "plow horse" or not, given a little rest instead of a 70-mile trailer ride before entering the starting gate, but a week before we clockd him at 25.4 for the quarter, and time on the feature race was about 27 seconds. All the mayors were swell sports, and enjoyed the competition. competi-tion. We hope they all come back next year to compete for a brand new trophy, and try to take away from Mayor Hank and his "plow horse" the title of "Champion Racing Mayor." It doesn't do any good to sit up and take notice if you keep on sitting. |
