Show j LEGION FORTY-NINERS FORTY-NINERS WILL FEATURE NOVEL GYMKHANA Preliminary plans for the 1956 Legion 49ers were made public this week by Ray Walker, Walk-er, commander of the local post. "This year the celebration will be a two-day jamboree," Commander Walker said, "with every minute of both days May 25th and 26th 'filled with fun and excitement. Two new major events are planned for this year which should provide much fun and many thrills for spectators and contestants alike. Indoors will be the "Follies Brassiere," featuring feat-uring all local and county-wide masculine talent, and Southern Utah's first "Gymkhana." "There is an old saying that 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy'," said Gordon Murdock, Gymkhana chairman. "It is perhaps as true of horse shows and horse racing as anything any-thing else. This year, to add epice to the program, the horse races will be interspersed with 'Gymkhana' events." The original Gymkhanas, Mr. Murdock explained, were old Anglo-Indian meets where various var-ious types of aces were held. Later a second variety, the "pa-gol" "pa-gol" or funny races, was added to the meets. The Indian term pagol has been dropped and all such races are now called Gymkhanas. Gym-khanas. Among the events planned for this year's program are: Trailer race, barrel race, run-ride-lead race, ring-spearing, relay races, old clothes race, musical chairs, musical pairs, balloon fight, mounted tug of war, pole bending, bend-ing, figure-8 stake race, etc. "County horsemen are being invited to participate as teams," Mr. Murdock said, "with the winners-being awarded a price in excess of $100.". An entry fee of $10 for each team will be required, and this entry fee will be refunded after the performance to all competing compet-ing teams. Further information may be obtained from Mr. Murdock. |
