Show Legionnaires Take Over For Annual '49er Event "GO WEST PARADE" SCHEDULED FOR 2:30; FIREWORKS DISPLAY IN EVENING "Senator Cfiaghorn" Pullem (Pullem, that is, suh!) this week tossed his ten-gallon skimmer into the Forty-Niner Queen ring when he posted a full-length photo of his bearded countenance on a voting bottle in a Milford beer parlor, announced an-nounced his candidacy for the position of Queen's Attendant at the American Legion's annual celebration, and, slapping the pearl-handled "equalizer" strapped to his waist, defied all comers to challenge him for the honor. The Senator, decked out in western garb and totin' a half-filled half-filled sack of Bull Durham, swore "by the ten thousand hairs of his beard" to protect Her Majesty against all miners, muckers, roughnecks and hangers-on when she parades down the center of Arion hall's glass-smooth glass-smooth dance floor to open the evening's festivities on May 16th. After the grand march, he will put his fog-horn voice to good use, directing the celebrants to the various concessions and mock gaming tables in "Allen s Alley," which will house the Legion's Le-gion's replica of an early-day gambling hall. The "Go West Parade," with at least twenty floats in the adult division, probably a score of junior floats, and a special group -from the Elemantry school to compete separately, will begin at 2:30 p. m., it was announced by Parade Marshal Thorpe Wad-dingham. Wad-dingham. Order of march was tentatively listed as follows: City Marshal Smith will lead the parade, mounted on a spirited spir-ited horse, followed by a massed bank of national colors, with the Milford Boy Scouts as color guards. Next will come the queen and her attendants, riding a float designed especially for her by the Legion Auxiliary. The Legionnaires, and Veterans Veter-ans of Foreign Wars, led by Commander Com-mander Gordon Murdock of the Veterans and Commander Steve Williams of the Legion, will precede pre-cede the special Legion-City comic band, which will delight the youngsters and amuse 1 the oldsters with their antics. Following Fol-lowing the band, the floats will pass in review, followed by the children's floats, which will be judged separately from the senior sen-ior division. All business houses' will close during the parade hours, with most of them remaining closed for the rest of the day. Children's concessations will be operated during the afternoon after-noon by the Ladies' Auxiliary, with free punch to be served immediately im-mediately after the parade to all junior entrants. "Allen's Alley," housing the Legion's mock gaming apparatus, appara-tus, will be opened about 6 p. m., and at 10 o'clock the Grand March of the Forty-Niners, led by Her Majesty the Queen, will start the dark-till-dawn dance in Arion Hall. The beard-judging ceremonies will take place during dur-ing the early hours of the dance, with 15 silver dollars to be awarded the winner, and $10 and $5 prizes going to the runner-ups. |
