Show Cherry harvest to be early; pickers needed An earlier than usual cherry harvest is basis for a request that those interested in employment em-ployment in the harvest make their availabiity known at once. This urging came from the Utah Department of Employment Employ-ment Security in Provo. The Utah Cherry Marketing Commission indicates that the cherry harvest will start June 23 instead of the usual July 5 date. The Employment Security Secur-ity officers stated that facilities facili-ties are now ready to register workers. Help from "professional" cherry picking crews, available in 1968, because of killing frosts in Oregon and Washington, Washing-ton, will not be available in Utah this year because Northwest North-west areas have good crops. Qualification for pickers require re-quire they be at least 14 years of age and have their own transportation. Younger pickers pick-ers are acceptable provided they are part of a family group. Wages are piece-work and pay 5 cents per pound for sweet cherries. The Utah Cherry Marketing Commission said the earlier than usual harvest start comes from a long spell of spring weather. |
