Show Six SHS seniors Indian students bid farewell MacArthur Halona, senior graduate, was chosen the most preferred man of the senior class. He has been on the Indian placement program pro-gram for the past 10 years. He played on the ward basketball bas-ketball team which won the championship. He has resided resid-ed with the Howard Stevens of Mapleton. He plans to continue his educaction at the BYU. Charlene Mae Begay, foster fos-ter daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Brian was chosen Senior Student of the Week, was vice-president of the FHA, member of the Steno Club, Pep Club and maintains main-tains a B plus average. She has participated in the Indian In-dian placement program for the past seven years. She will continue her education at the BYU with a nursing major her goal. Ida Natanabah who made her home with Mr. and Mrs Norman Woodhouse is on the program for the first year here. She uses her talents tal-ents and is very artistic. She plans to attend the Utah Many foster parents in Springville and Mapleton will bid goodby to their foster fos-ter Indian students as the school year closes today and students head back to their respective homes. For six of these students, they will be completing their high school requirements require-ments at commencement and will be parting with their many friends they have made while attending high school in Springville. This year there were 34 Indian students living in the Springville and Mapleton homes, many of whom have made their homes here for a number of years during the school year. Students who will be graduating grad-uating tonight (Wed.) at commencecment at the high school are the following: Jeanie Benally who has resided re-sided at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Hatch. Jeanie has lived with the Hatch family for the past 6 years. She has been a very active student at the high school and was chosen as second attendant to the homecoming queen. She was also secretary of the seminary sem-inary and president of the Future Homemakers of America. Am-erica. She was a member of the PeP Club and maintained maintain-ed a B scholastic average. She plans to enroll at the BYU and major in elementary elemen-tary educaction. Effie Mae Clark, foster student of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Black, was the winner of the $50 art achievement award. She was a member of the Steno Club, was selected se-lected Student of the Week and maintains a B average. She also plans to attend the BYU and major in business. Technical College at Provo. Susie Curley, who has been on the placement program pro-gram for three years has been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Frost. She was a member of the FHA and works at Barts. In her spare time she spends her time in drawing. She plans to attend a beauty college. In poetry, Mrs. Freeman Bird describes the goals and ideals of the Indian people and to those who have opened open-ed their hearts and their homes to them. Indian Trails Indian trails winding over the hill, Indian trails skirting mountain moun-tain and rill. Indian trails leading hither and yon Indian trails to by-paths and hogan. Indian trails traced with want and despair, Indian trails seeking food and protection Indian trails without sense of direction Seeking, yes seeking, in vain. Indian trails leading now to the schoolhouse To industry, freedom from want, Happy children are now enjoying en-joying Good food, music, literature litera-ture and art. The Lord in his mercy and wisdom Will now gather them into his fold Their future is now in his keeping To wisdom and blessings untold. GOING HOME Charlene Bagay, left, discusses plans for returning home with Jeanie Benally as they conclude their high school days at Springville High School. The two Indian In-dian students have made many friends and are two of the outstanding graduating seniors of the class of 1969. Charlene Char-lene will be flying home and is showing Jeanie where she will go. Both girls are planning on furthering their education educa-tion at Brigham Young University. They have participated in the Indian Placement Program sponsored by LDS Church. |
