Show Homecoming game Saturday set at BYU with UTEP. starting 1:30 Whenever the teams of Tommy Tom-my Hudspeth and Bobby Dobbs meet together on the gridiron, ther is an audible shudder from the statisticians and the guy working the scoreboard. For them it means work. Such was the case two years ago in Provo when the Cougars and a quarterback named Virgil Vir-gil Carter rocked the University Univer-sity of Texas Miners, 53-33. That game established some national records. The Miners didn't forget. Last year in El Paso the Dobbs crew found revenge, socking the Mountain Cats with a 47-17 defeat. So, in two games the two rivals ri-vals ,have scored a total of 150 points between them. That should be some sort of record rec-ord It figures . that the third meeting between the two, which is scheduled for Saturday Satur-day at 1:30 in Provo, should produce like fireworks. This may not be the case, however, since the Cougars haven't a Virgil Carter or Phil Odle and the Miners no longer have the services of Billy Stevens Ste-vens or Bob Wallace. Even without the super-stars of the past two seasons, the Miners and Cougars are expec- ready, but they had trouble uncorking un-corking it against a team like the Wildcats. They were limited limit-ed to 36 yards rushing in 37 carries, and their passing game was held to 16 completions of 36 attempts for 118 yards. The fact that the Cougars had real trouble moving the ball is a puzzle for the BYU staff. They had hoped for a better shewing "I did feel that our defense was outstanding," commented head coach Tommy Hudspeth. "We got some great performances perform-ances out of our defensive personnel, per-sonnel, but our offensive team left a lot to be desired." The fans have come to expect a real show from the two teams. If the Cougars come up with an offensive explosion, it will probably be because they were saving it in last Saturday night's 3-19 loss to Arizona. BYU may have had its offense |
