Show ROOTS TO THE FORE - 1 When plants grown in peat po(s are set in the garden, roots are already growing through pot wall so pot as well as soil must be kept moist until all roots have grown through wall. Plants requiring long seasons of growth may be started from seeds sown indoors then, after their third set of leaves (second set of true leaves) has appeared, transplanted to peat pots, one seedling to a pot. I In this fashion they may be grown to the time when frost danger is over. Then they should be moved to the garden and planted, pot and all, to avoid any setback in growth.. By that time their roots will look like those in the picture they'll have started to grow through the wall of the peat pot. Because all the roots must grow through the pot wall in order to reach the soil, they should be encouraged to do so by keeping the pot damp. Soak it in water before setting it, with plant inside, into the soil. If this proves impractical, under your circumstances, then water thoroughly, directly after setting, sufficient to soak the peat pot as well as the soil around it. For best growth of plant roots, therefore plant tops, continue con-tinue to keep the peat pots moist until all roots can grow through them and obtain moisture mois-ture directly from the soil. |
