Tanner will be marshall of the day and he and his wife will be honored hon-ored guests of the city at special reception. For Art City Days Parade Parade grand marshall chosen With the April art exhibit over, attention of townspeople townspeo-ple turned this week to the next major event Art City Days, June 20, 21 and 22. Highlighting the 3-d a y event, will be the parade Saturday forenoon, at which Nathan Elden Tanner of the First Presidency of the LDS Church, will be Grand Marshall. Mar-shall. This event is expected to attract thousands of people. peo-ple. President Tanner and his wife, Sara Isabelle, will be guests of the city during the day and a reception is being planned for them after af-ter the parade. President Tanner, who became be-came a citizen of the United States May 2, 1966, has lived liv-ed most of his life in Canada. Can-ada. He began a career of teaching in Canada schools in Cardston, Alberta, in 1928 and served also on the town council. He was a leader in Canadian Cana-dian industry serving as president of Merrill Petroleum Petro-leum Ltd. and director of the Toronto Dominion Bank of Canada. In recent years, he was president of the Canadian Ca-nadian Gas Association and a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta. He has filled many positions posi-tions as a church leader. He presided over the Calgary Stake from 1953 until his ordination as a general authority au-thority of the LDS Church in 1960. He served as president presi-dent of the West European Mission from which he was released in January 1963. He later became president of the Genealogical S o c iety. Although Al-though his family moved to Canada in 1897, he was born in Salt Lake City, May 9, 1898. He married Sara Isabelle Merrill of Hill Springs, Alberta, Al-berta, Dec. 20, 1919. They have five daughters. |
