Show Turkey trapping now underway Utah State Division of Fish and Game biologists are currently cur-rently engaged in a turkey trapping program in the Boulder Boul-der Mountain area of southern Utah. The purpose of the trapping is to transplant this fine game bird into all areas of the state where suitable habitat exists. Biologists trap the wary birds by baiting them into a selected area and firing a cannon can-non net over them. This is a method commonly used to trap waterfowl, and it also works on turkey. The turkeys are banded, weighed, and placed in crates for transportation to the release site. In the groups of released birds, one torn to three hens is the desired transplant ratio. Care is taken to make sure the release site is in proper habitat. Remote areas with good stand of ponderosa pine and oak brush are selected. Southern Utah is the primary location of such habitat. Utah held its first turkey hunt in 1963, and hunts have been authorized every year since. Thirty percent of the hunters participating in 1967's fall hunt bagged their birds. This was an increase in hunter success over the prior two years.
