Show Editorial Utah's forgotten city Mapleton, an incorporated city of over 2,000 population, is nestled at the base of beautiful Sierra Bonita mountain commonly known as Maple mountain. It is mostly a farming community, but over the past ten years has seen a better than average growth. However, up to the present time the Utah State Highway High-way department has all but refused to acknowledge the exis-tance exis-tance of this beautiful city. This is shown by the fact that nowhere on the new interstate highway, or its access routes is there a sign of any type indicating any route to the city of Mapleton. This is also true of US Highway 89 and 91 from Provo to Spanish Fork. It is pointed out that there are signs indicating the way to other Utah County communities such as Lindon, Lake Shore and Santaquin and at the intersection of 400 South and Main Street in Springville there is even a sign indicating indicat-ing the way to Mt. Pleasant, a city in Sanpete County, but nothing indicating the way to Mapleton. Last month the Salt Lake City news media pointed out that an extensive resigning project is going to be done on the freeways of that city costing upwards of $200,000.00 of the taxpayers money. If the State Highway department can afford af-ford to spend this kind of money to correct existing sign errors, surely the highway department can find the means and the money to properly indicate the way to the city of Mapleton. It is the contention of this newspaper that the Utah State Highway department make every effort to place a sign on the interstate indicating where to turn off to Mapleton as well as direction signs at the junction of US 89 and 91 and at the intersection of 400 South and Main Street in Springville. Spring-ville. Also proper signing indicating the Mapleton turn-off should be done on the new section of interstate to be com-oleted com-oleted this fall from Santiquin to Spanish Fork. |
