Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis inaugurated inaug-urated a special Mothers Friendship Friend-ship Day in 1868, which had the fine purpose of reuniting families and friends who had in many cases been divided by the Civil War. But it was as a mother herself her-self that she did most to bring about Mothers Day. For it was her daughter, Anna M. Jarvis, who started the first Mothers Day observance in honor of her mother. It was held on May 10, 1908, in the small church in Grafton. Two years later it became a state-wide observance and in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed the bill creating the second sec-ond Sunday in May as a national tribute to Mothers. Few days have had so spontaneous spon-taneous and widespread an acceptance ac-ceptance . . . perhaps because no other strikes closer to our hearts.
