Show Wild turkeys released in eastern sector A release of eight wild turkeys tur-keys in the Dowd Mountain area on the eastern slopes of the Uninta Range was announced announ-ced today by the Utah Department Depart-ment of Fish and Game. The big birds, 5 hens and 3 toms, were released into their new range less than 24 hours after they were trapped on the LaSal Mountains in Grand County. They are a supplemental supple-mental plant to the first release re-lease of 9 turkeys in the Dowd Mountain area made two years ago this winter Program to establish the Merriam turkeys in Utah began be-gan with a first release of 16 birds in the LaSal Mountains during the fall of 1952. These birds came from Colorado in exchange for chukar partridge. They have done well over the years to the point that brood birds for stocking other areas of suitable habitat have been trapped there since 1960. Other plants have been made with additional birds from Colorado, Col-orado, from Arizona, and from the East Zion section where the first releases were made in 1957. A total of 141 turkeys have now been released into nine chosen areas of Grand, San Juan, Garfield, Kane, Sevier, Daggett and Washington Counties Coun-ties A first hunting season in three of the planting sites was held during October last year. These were in the East Zion, Boulder and LaSal Mountain areas Department biologists said further releases would be made in new planting sites as birds arae available. There is no size limit on any species of fish which may be caught from Utah waters. |
