Robinson said he didn't expect the win to be by such a wide margin, nor did he expect it to be so close in Cedar City, saying that he thought Frehner would take a majority there. By BRUCE LEE Record Editor James C. Robinson, Scott Jay Thorley and Clair Hulet won their respective races in the primary elections elec-tions Tuesday, with all three advancing to the general November election unopposed. Robinson, Parowan, took the balloting for two-year county commissioner com-missioner against Clayton Frehner, Cedar City. Thorley won big over Dale C. Hatch for the county attorney position. And incumbent Clair Hulet won a close one for county clerk against David I. Yardley. Turnout for the election, which featured only Republicans and nonpartisan non-partisan candidates, was very light, "exceptionally light," according to Hulet. County Commission "Im pleased," said Robinson about his victory. "Now it's time to go to work." He also had praise for his opponent, saying, "I have a lot of respect for Clayton Frehner, I really do." Robinson came up with a surprisingly easy victory against Frehner for the commission seat, collecting 1,862 of the 2,994 votes cast. Total percentages were 62 percent for Robinson and 38 percent for Frehner. Perhaps the most surprising vote was that o of Cedar City, where local resident Frehner defeated Robinson by only six total votes in the 17 districts. Also, Robinson won in 11 of the 17 districts. Robinson, on the other hand, won big in his hometown. In the three Parowan districts, he collected 568 votes, while Frehner only took 99. Robinson also Election returns onpageA4 because everybody doesn't vote," he said. Hulet and Yardley both live in Parowan, but Hulet actually won the race in Cedar City. Yardley took two of the three Parowan districts, and collected 416 of the Parowan votes, while Hulet gained only 257. Yardley also won in Paragonah and Summit, but Hulet took the majority in Brian Head. "This is one of the closer races I've ever been in, said Hulet as he looked back over the day's events late Tuesday night. County attorney The race for Iron County attorney was never really very close, with Scott Jay Thorley taking it by a large margin from Dale C. Hatch in the end. The total results show Thorley garnering 2,012 votes, with Hatch taking only 904. The percentage margin was 69 percent for Thorley and 31 percent for Hatch, making the victory more than two to one. In this race there was really no one area that supported one candidate any more than the other, with the results being pretty much the same in most districts. The winners in all three of these races will not be opposed in the November general election, thus their seats in 1983 are assured. r ih.. ... J I '''' : ' 1 ,;C ! 1 1 III I I County clerk The race for county clerk was by far the tightest on the ballot this year, with incumbent Clair Hulet pulling it out over David I. Yardley in the end. The margin was only 242 out of a total of 2,982 votes cast. Hulet collected 1,612 votes, and Yardley received 1,370. The percentage of margin was 54 percent for Hulet and 46 percent for Yardley. "I'm of course happy about it," said Hulet. "At the same time I'm a little disappointed of it in some areas." This is the first primary election Hulet has ever been challenged in, in all his many years of elections; and he felt the pressure distinctly. In fact, he felt that if the election had been general, it wouldn't have been as close. Primary elections are "sort of dangerous There really were no lines at the polls Tuesday for primary elections. In fact, the turn-out was quite light. However, those who did turn out chose their candidates for November's Novem-ber's general election. |
