Show Competition slated ii ill li .. HaL : ... li&s The fifth annual Utah High School Shakespeare Competition will be Sept. 25-26 at Southern Utah State College. Sponsored by the SUSC Theater Arts Department and the Utah ! Shakespearean Festival, trophies will be awarded winners in mono-acts, ! duo-scenes and ensemble performances of Shakespearean drama. "In fairness to everyone, winners will be announced in two divisions," said R. Scott Phillips, theater public "relations director. "Students from 1A and 2A schools will compete in the Westminster division, while students from the large 3A and 4A schools will compete in the Oxford Ox-ford division." University professors and professional actors, many of who have participated par-ticipated in the Utah Shakespearean Festival, will be competition judges. Fred C. Adams, USF director and professor of theater arts at SUSC, is the competition com-petition director. "The majority ' of students on campus for the event will be from Utah and the Las Vegas area, with others coming from northern Arizona and California schools," Phillips said. "The annual competition com-petition is held as incentive in-centive for students to become involved in Shakespearean drama with emphasis on learning. lear-ning. They have the opportunity to perform on the stage of the Adams Memorial Theater, site ol the Utah Shakespearean Festival, and can perform per-form whatever works they want from the Shakespearean cajinon," he continued. Six students will receive full-tuitior scholarships to SUSC for their acting abilities. Oral critiques will be given by the judges after each performance, and the twfrday agenda includes in-cludes several workshops in acting, stage movement and stage make-up. Payson and Hurricane high schools won ! sweepstakes honors last year. Second and third places in the Oxford diyision were won by Provo and Timpview, respectively, with Park i City and Dixie Junior i High taking second and third places in the Westminster division. "The public is invited ' and encouraged to wit-' wit-' ness scenes in process," Phillips said. "Activities begin at 9:30 a.m. each ' day and continue until 4:30 p.m., with a break ' for lunch between 12:30 and 1:30." I "We're expecting the fifth annual competition . to be the best ever," he said. "If the recent . success of the USF's 10th . season carries over to the high school Shakespeare . competition, it will be a great success indeed." Robin Drew Haight recently began practicing dentistry in the Cedar Dental Center, 150 W. Center Street. He and his family recently moved back to Cedar City after living in Seattle, Wash., for the past four years. He graduated June 13, 1981 from the University of Washington School of Dentistry. The son of Mary Belle Haight and the late Leonard Drew Haight, he is a graduate of Cedar High School and Southern Utah State College. |
