Show Tiny quake hits area KANARRAVILLE -Three small earthquakes, all measuring about 3.25 on the Richter scale, slightly shook residents between here and Cedar City Friday morning. Dr. Kenneth L. Cook of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations reported that the tremors were centered "seven miles south-south east from Kanarraville and 17 miles south of Cedar - City."- The- first- quake-occurred quake-occurred at 3:26 a.m., the second at 7:50 a.m. and the third at 9:46 a.m. Residents as far away as Cedar City reported feeling the minor quakes. "The earthquakes a-ppear a-ppear to be part of a continuing low-level swarm of earthquakes that began in late December 1980," Cook said. "On December 21, 1980, a magnitude 3.6 shock occurred in this same area, .... "Series of small ear thquakes of this type are typical in southern Utah," Cook Continued. "This includes swarms near Orderville during 1926-27, near Panguitch in 1937 and near Cedar City during 1942-43 and 1971. Dr. Cook has asked people in the area to fill out a questionnaire whether they, felt the earthquake or not. Copies of that questionnaire can be found in this week's Iron County Record. a |
