Show Institutional Council okay appointments New faculty appointments headlined the Southern Utah State Institutional Council meeting Friday, May 30. The council also approved increased on-campus board and room rates and accepted the low bid for campus improvement projects. David H. Menke, Ph.D., UCLA, was approved by the Council to an appointment ap-pointment as an instructor of Physics. Dr. Menke has seven years of teaching experience on the college level, most recently as a lecturer in Physics-Astronomy at California State University. The Council also approved the appointment in the School of Education of Gary M. Hale, Ph.D., University of Oklahoma. Dr. Hale is currently the Coordinator of Secondary Education at Elmira College, Elmira, New York. He comes to SUSC with 10 years of college teaching experience. Also approved by the Council was Ellison Edward Glattly, M.A., San Diego State University. Glattly, the new director of Chorale Music, has sung as soloist with the Roger Wagner Chorale and the San Diego Civic Opera and will be singing as baritone soloist with the William Hall Chorale this summer. He has studied in New York City, taught at Xavier University in New Orleans, and holds teaching credentials in the State of California. He also plays the cello. James Donald Dillard will be teaching in the Department of Communications. He has a Masters degree from East Texas State University in Journalism and Psychology and is involved in Doctoral Doc-toral studies in Marketing at the University of Houston. A professional writer with an extensive background in journalism, advertising, and public relations, Dillard is currently a technical writer for IMCO Services, a manufacturer of oilfield drilling equipment. In a move to equalize the effects of inflation, the Council approved board and room rate increases for on- campus residence halls. Board and room rates for Juniper Hall will go up $35 per quarter, an average of 9.5 percent depending on which meal plan is used. Manzanita Hall residents will be paying $15 a quarter more next , y'ear, a 12.9 percent increase. Married students living in Oak Hall will be paying 12.5 percent more, a $10 a month increase. Blackburn and Gower, Cedar City contractors, will begin work soon on several campus improvement projects as a result of the Council's acceptance of their low bid for the work. The projects include landscaping land-scaping of the area around Thun-derbird Thun-derbird Stadium and the addition of a concrete bleacher pad on the east side of the stadium to accomodate additional ad-ditional temporary bleachers. Other projects in the bid were concrete walks near the new Business Building and a water control and drainage project. The Council approved the use of a new letterhead, college envelope, and business card designed by Arlene Braithwaite, Art Instructor at the college. The new stationary motif emphasizes the college's bristlecone pine logo and presents a stronger, more distinct image for the college. A manual for use of the college logos will be presented for approval at the next Council meeting. A minor in Dance was approved to enhance other related majors at the college. The demand for high school dance instructors has increased appreciably recnetly and will continue con-tinue to grow in the future, according to local high school leaders quoted by Conrad V. Hatch, Academic Vice President. The Dance minor will augment several majors at the college, such as, Physical Education, Theatre Arts and Music. Gifts and grants for April totaling $107,823 were approved and accepted and special improvement projects were given the go-ahead in housing, food services, and the student center. |
