Methane gas from surrounding coal fields could be a potential electric generating source for Cedar City. Dr. Tom Sawyer of Minority Enterprise En-terprise Services outlined a proposal to drill two test wells to 12-1500 feet within five miles of the city to tap methane gas captured in the over two billion tons of coal estimated to be in the Kolob region. Sawyer proposes to apply to the . Department of Energy for the study's funding and said that drilling could begin in June and would take from eight to nine months for the results to be finalized. He estimated costs for the project at $190,000 with no costs for the city. The two and a half inch holes will be electrically logged and if the coal shows sufficient "gasiness"-at least five cubic centimeters per gram- the gas could be commercially developed or used to run a turbine generator for producing electricity for the city. Sawyer in response to a request from City Councilman Harold Shirley said that he would research the costs of such a system for generating from 20-25 megawatts. He also said that such generating plants are used on the north slope in Alaska. Information from the engineering study would be available for the city's use said Sawyer. He felt that his company's application for the grant money would be further supported by the proposed MX project in the area. "Cedar City is in a unique position lor energy development to take place-this place-this energy could provide a basic infra-structure to reduce the impact of the MX project and its energy demands on the area," he continued. The engineering firm headquartered headquar-tered in Orem is entirely owned by persons of minority ethnic backgrounds and Sawyer said that they have done mine safety studies, soil vegetation inventories and other studies t throughout the country. He said that they were the first company from a non communist country allowed in the Republic of Guinea to do mining studies.
