Show Tigers rail oveir Delta JV 28-6 BY RED WILSON & BRIAN SHERWOOD The Milford Tigers gave local fans something they hadn't had in two years. By rolling over Delta's Jr. Varsity, 34-6, they racked up their first win in football foot-ball since beating Parowan in 1978, in the first game of the season. It was a big win for new Coach,' Kevin Barnes-, who was carried off the field by his squad. It was a good opening game for the Tigers, who have only 29 ballplayers. The Delta JV has real potential and looked very good for their youth, but were unable to contain Milford's two running run-ning backs, Laney Johnson, and Ephle Tolman, running behind Milford's more experienced ex-perienced line. And Milford's defense was crushng, as time and time again, they dropped the Rab bits for losses, and moved them back. Only three times did Milford allow the Rabbits in Tiger territory all evening, even-ing, and allowed them only one score. Milford's Tolman scored first on a pitchout with 11:15 left In the second quarter. Johnson added a key block as Tolman crossed the goal on a wide sweep to his left. Troy Hardy's attempt at an extra point was blocked, but the Tigers were on the scoreboard. Danny Davis scored the second touchdown when he hauled in a bomb from young Chad Hardy on the 10, and scampered across the goal with 1:54 left in the half. The 33 yard play was capped cap-ped when Johnson dived for two points on the point after af-ter touchdown, and gave the Tigers a 14-0 lead going into the half. Milford received after intermission in-termission and starting from their own 43 yard line were unable to move the ball. A 40 yard punt by Troy Hardy put the Rabbits in the hole, and Darryl Moody and Wayne Lowe sacked the Rabbit quarterback for consecutive losses and they were forced to punt from their end zone. The punt managed to clear a horde of Tiger rushers, but went almost straight up, and into the arms of Tolman, in the endzone, for the third Tiger score. Johnson again carried for the PAT and the score was 22-0. Fumbles swapped the ball back and forth a couple of times, then Delta tried a long pass that was picked up by Troy Hardy on the Rabbit Rab-bit 46 yard line. Picking up one key block, Hardy outran the Rabbit defenders on a beautiful run, for a TD. But a clipping penalty nullified nulli-fied the touchdown, and Milford Mil-ford started on the Rabbit 24. After picking up a first and ten, the Rabbits pushed push-ed the Tigers back to the 43 where Hardy was forced to punt. Robbie Boltin recovered a fumble as the third quarter quar-ter ended. Unable to move the ball Hardy again punted punt-ed to the Rabbit 1 yard line. Delta tried to pass out of the end zone, and big Wayne Lowe intercepted for Milford, and returned to the one yard line. Johnson dove for six more and the score was 28-0. Coach Barnes put in his younger men on defense with nine minutes on the clock. They held on downs, but were unable to move the ball, and were forced to punt. Robbie Bolton recovered a fumble as the third quarter quar-ter ended. But a roughing the kicker call, gave them the ball on Delta's 35 yard line. Johnson moved the ball to the 12 on two carries, and Tolman picked up another first down on the two in two carries. Johnson took it in for the final score, '34-6. The kick was Blocked. Delta took the kickoff and returned to Milford's 32, but the Tigers held on downs with 40 seconds remaining, and ran out the clock. The story may be different differ-ent next Friday when Milford Mil-ford takes on the Rams at Parowan, but for Milford fans, the win was one they have been waiting a long time for, and an excellent start for Coach Barnes. The Tigers will travel the next three weeks, to Parowan, North Sevier and Hurricane, and then be home for the three final games with Kanab, Parowan and Beaver. Win or lose, give them your support, knowing the Coach and Team will be giving 100 percent. |
